Camelback Resort Offers Premium Poconos Skiing

The Poconos has a reputation as a lovers’ getaway, but for those who crave winter activity, the Camelback Resort will make you fall in love with skiing. Here are some basics on what to expect when you hit the slopes in Tannersville, PA, from a local’s perspective.

Access: Camelback is easily accessible from Central PA, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York, located just off I-80. Address for Google Maps is One Camelback Rd, Tannersville, PA 18372.

Trails: This Poconos skiing resort offers 34 trails (five black), a snowtubing park, terrain parks and half pipes. Check out the Camelback website for daily updates on snowmaking, open trails, and terrain park construction. There’s also a blog for skiing enthusiasts.

Prices: Camelback Resort offers a $2 discount for purchasing tickets online (you print a barcode on your home computer and take it straight to the slope entrance), and doing so lets you skip the line at the ticket window. Midweek lift ticket rates run $44 for adults and $31 for youth; weekend lift ticket rates are $52 and $39. [Season pass rates not yet available for 2010.]

Parking: The lots closest to the ticket windows fill quickly, so get there by 9:00 AM if you don’t want to hike or deal with overflow parking. Shuttle buses are available from overflow lots.

Food: Until recently, Camelback’s food left a lot to be desired, but the 2008-2009 season saw a revamp of their menu offerings. Along with the usual slopeside fare of burgers and pizza, the resort’s delis and grills offer lighter options, such as fresh salads, grilled chicken, yogurt, and fruit. Expect to pay $20+ for a meal and drinks for two adults. If you go off mountain, the nearby Barley Creek Brewery (Sullivan Trail & Camelback Road, Tannersville – you’ll see it on your way up the mountain) is a great place for lunch or dinner.

Lodging: Camelback Resort suggests local lodging partners that are pretty pricey, but the closest reasonably priced hotel is the Poconos Ramada Inn. Both Jacuzzi and fireplace rooms available, and it’s only 5 minutes from Camelback Resort.
